Update default policy with inetadm: inetadm -M tcpwrappers=TRUE Notes: TCP Wrappers is a host-based Access Control System (ACL) that allows administrators to control who has access to various network services based on the IP address of the remote end of the connection. TCP Wrappers also provide logging information via syslog about both successful and unsuccessful connections. Rather than enabling TCP Wrappers for all services with 'inetadm -M.' , the administrator has the option of enabling TCP Wrappers for individual services with 'inetadm -m tcpwrappers=TRUE', where is the name of the specific service that should use TCP Wrappers. Note that the above actions will only provide filtering on standard TCP-based services that are spawned by inetd. To protect UDP and RPC-based services that are spawned from inetd, consider implementing a host-based firewall such as ipfilter ('man ipf' for further information). The versions of SSH and sendmail that ship with Solaris 10 will automatically use TCP Wrappers to filter access if a hosts.allow or hosts.deny file exists.
Also, the command 'svccfg -s rpc/bind setprop config/enabletcpwrappers=true' will enable TCP Wrappers for the rpc/bind service. Firewall using ipf Is firewall enabled? Passmgmt -m -s /usr/bin/bash root This is not a security recommendation, but some people may want consistency between solaris and linux systems. In Solaris 8 & 9 its highly recommended to keep the default root shell as /sbin/sh because bash links to libraries that could possibly be in a /usr/lib that is nfs mounted or in a partition that has failed. But in Solaris 10, all the standard libraries are in /lib and Solaris 10 automatically falls back to /sbin/sh if the root shell ( or sudo ) fails. Reference: Additional Programs.

Hello Group, I'm a newbie trying to manage his first install of Solaris 10. (My system runs on windows xp, service pack 2) I downloaded 5 zip files from the site www.sun.com. All of the zip files have the correct md5 checksum. I then unzip them with winzip version 8.1.
Next, I use 'copy /b sol-10-GA-x86-dvd-iso-a + sol-10-GA-x86-dvd-iso-b + sol-10-GA-x86-dvd-iso-c + sol-10-GA-x86-dvd-iso-d + sol-10-GA-x86-dvd-iso-e sol-10-GA-x86-dvd-iso.iso' at the command line to create one iso dvd image. This iso file fails the md5 checksum. I've used a command line version of md5 and a windows program called 'Advanced checksum verifier'.
They both come up with 'd7b6f773519c1caaafb57100d428a0e3' as the checksum. It should be '1acfdb6601a847bbe74e91' according the 'General procedure for DVD download' from www.sun.com. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I tried several times but each time it failed and the error messages like 'File not found' or 'Read error'. My connection is stable (shown 32kbps and 18 hrs completion time) and I used jdownloader and flashgot from firefox but failed each time. Does oracle really want us to download it?
Is there any torrent file of it? Is there any other site which hosts this file which can be downloaded.? It's becoming really very frustrating. Any help please. I used sun download manager once upon a time.
I think it is not available now and it's there then it wouldn't of any help if my connection isn't fast enough (once disconnected it reset the peer) but sadly, i have no idea what rate of speed can qualify a connection a decent or fast connection. I was asked to use wget by Corona688 and to use -c with wget by Brandon Hume John D. Groenveld told me 'You need an Oracle equivalent to Sun's wgetsdlc shell script which wrapped wget(1) with the SSL and HTTP Cookie options to SSO authenticate and indicate acceptance of the OTN license for customers and potential customers with limited bandwidth. Here's a first stab:But I couldn't find oracle's WGET but found instead (by google) the following: This post was very helpful but slightly different in nature so I did some R&D with wget and download link. First wget was initiated by firefox so wget started downloading iso file and printing output on console. I copied the download link from that output, disconnected that download, started wget manually with -c and download link which appeared with authentication parameter.
Here is my download link. Wget -c [email protected] -http-passwd=mypasswd -no-check-certificate I had started download and got disconnection with read error (due to the problem at my network. Got ping loss)but started again and it has started at the offset of previously downloaded part.

Brian's opinion first, who can ever argue when something is free? I really like the fact that sun made a dvd version available as well. With the wide availability of dvd drives it's much easier to put the operating system on a single dvd than having to burn and carry around multiple cds to install the operating system. Of course, you do need access to a dvd burner.
Sun is making a great move by making solaris 10 open source. The money is in the support, which is why companies that distribute linux make money. It's no surprise that below the download options for solaris 10 there is a link.
A basic service plan starts at us$120 and is what you need if you want solaris 10 updates. That's not a bad deal when you figure that's for up to 8 physical processors. Best of all, multi-core processors are still counted as a single processor. Does it support nvidia 6800 gts?
What dvd burners are supported etc does not make sense to download if it wont run. – by link please hw support? (9:48am est wed feb 02 2005) who needs hardware support, you have the magic source code. With enough time and effort, you.may.

Sun has it right (10:00am est wed feb 02 2005) this is the way to do “open source”. One large overseer maintains the product, keeps it running properly, while anyone and everyone is free to change it, and perhaps submit changes to sun, who we trust will properly review the submitted code and ensure that the os is still secure. If it runs maya, and 3ds max i might consider putting on a comp at some point. – by neat stuff a lot of free power (10:30am est wed feb 02 2005) no one should underestimate the power of the solaris oe either. And that makes it even more amazing that they are offering it for free download.
Solaris has capabilities that most other os's can only dream of. – by the scavenger re: sun has it right (12:04pm est wed feb 02 2005) it's too early to tell. Whether they have it “right” or not will depend to a large extent on the contributions made by others. If noone contributes, all they've succeeded in doing is exposing any features that made solaris unique and might have given it a marketplace advantage.
In any case, look for these things to start showing up in linux real soon. Side note to “grown up”: i guess the sarcasm didn't come through? – by jqp oh man i'm jealous (12:08pm est wed feb 02 2005) if i get my approval for a new sun blade server i'm gonna have to try this. Shit, have 56k modem. Gonna order the thing. – by bla ho-hum (12:25pm est wed feb 02 2005) i'm a big os geek, like most readers here probably are. I've installed countless linux distributions every flavor of windows and beos my osx box is just kick ass. But i find it very hard to get excited about solaris maybe it's just because of their ever-annoying scott mcnealy, or maybe it's due to all the fud they've spread over the years, but i really doubt that this will ever be downloaded by myself, let alone installed. I'm sure that this is going to sound like any other mac user raving uncontrollably, but since i've gotten my (dual 2ghz) osx box, i find myself spending less and less time checking out the latest linux developments, let alone the latest windows updates (even though i still have to work on windows a lot, it's via remote desktop on osx).
Osx truly is what i've been looking for all along, i feel. Someone else put it best: “osx allows me to tinker when i want to tinker.
But when i need to get work done, it just works, with no tinkering required.” it wasn't until i really started spending a lot of time in osx that i realized just how much of my time had been spent tinkering with linux and windows, just to get them to work the way i wanted them to. Osx just does it.
Ok now all the kids who can't afford macs can start with their mac bashing (overpriced, underpowered, blah blah blah). – by a mac convert re: a mac convert (12:41pm est wed feb 02 2005) no, we won't say a word about the macs. Rude, unseemly and distasteful. – by cynical bastard mac convert (1:40pm est wed feb 02 2005) what windows tinkering can you possibly need to get work done? Don't be a flame baiter.or a pillow biter either. – by poopchute a mac convert (1:51pm est wed feb 02 2005) i pity you. Solaris 10 has a lot of great features that the mac os may never have. Zfs is a feature that is cool enough for me to want to load it.
Now all the file management can be done from the os and if it works the way they say it will, i can stop paying thousands to veritas. Here is what my sun rep sent me: “solaris 10 is now officially a production release. Download it today and see how solaris can make a difference for you.
If you need a fast, reliable, and secure os to run your datacenter, your web farm, and your business critical systems — then solaris 10 is for you.
